What Winning Means
This has been a tough year (more like, couple of years) to be in the oil and gas sector. The market conditions mean operators need to find ways to cut costs –safely and productively. The exploration and discovery that can offer a sense of adventure and achievement is largely on hold. For those who are decades into industry careers this latest cycle may seem only a blip. Still the faces of sector veterans and newcomers alike have looked less than cheerful at oil and gas conferences for the past 12-to-18 months.
Despite the uncertain outlook, the faces of my colleagues are full of determination and hope. I believe this is why GE Oil & Gas has won Petroleum Economist’s prestigiousTechnology Company of the Year 2016 award.
To borrow a recently uttered, oft-quoted phrase “when they go low, we go high.” In our case the ‘low’ is the oil price and the ‘high’ is high technology. We believe the future of this sector relies on a digital industrial transformation and we aim to be at the center of it. From monitoring and improving machinery performance using algorithms and software in piping stations, to hardware enhancements that reduce unplanned downtime on offshore platforms.
There’s a lot of pride in our manufacturing sites, service shops and offices when our technological services, tools and software lift the state of play for customers. In the past year, this has included partnerships with Technip, to BP and Paradigm, and DSLNG. We have evolved our business and digital offerings to match the needs of our customers, partnering to accelerate the digital transition to help their businesses become stronger and more productive over the long-term.
This year’s award from the Petroleum Economist builds upon our recognition last year for Cleaner Energy Initiative of the Year. A win we shared with our partner Statoil. And this year my Communications team was nominated for Stakeholder Communications Program of the Year. It is a great honor for us to receive runner-up for our Public Relations & Corporate Social Responsibility efforts from this respected publication.
Each win or near-win replenishes our optimism and helps to validate that we are on the right path; putting our engineering expertise, our values and our voices to work for our customers and communities. We are committed to fueling the future safely, more cleanly and efficiently. And we believe that delivering the sector’s leading technological services, tools and software is the right way to do that. So, a win for GE Oil & Gas is a win for us all.
