Prepare for the Unexpected and Defend Against Riser Collapse
For unplanned events such as an emergency disconnect of the LMRP, a gas kick that evacuates the riser or a failure of the lower riser section, the Riser Fill-Up Valve is a necessity. While varying the wall thicknesses of marine drilling risers will temper the collapse rating of the string, increasing wall thickness sufficiently in deepwater drilling is impractical. GE's Riser Fill-Up Valve is designed to open automatically or to be operated manually in response to a sudden pressure differential between the inside and outside of the riser. When actuated, the Riser Fill-Up Valve opens, allowing the riser to fill with seawater, thus equalizing the pressure differential and preventing collapse of the riser.
