Deep-water pipelines require different design specifications than regular pipelines. They typically have significantly heavier walls, are subjected to extremely high pressures and are telescopic in design, including multi-diameter segments throughout. Traditional in-line tools are not capable of inspecting these new deep-sea pipelines. GE's SmartScan DS is a high-resolution, 24-30" in-line inspection tool with ID/OD measurement capabilities. It's based on proven technology and provides a report with all MFL detectable defects starting at 5% depth for general corrosion and 10% pitting. SmartScan DS can go deeper than any other tools and operate in extremely high pressure conditions. It has very heavy wall inspection capability and is able to negotiate vertical wye pieces and flex joints. As a result operators can design their pipelines using low-cost features such as telescopics, wye splits, vertical wyes and varying WT - to save millions of dollars during construction. |
