Design PhilosophySeries "P" hypercompressors are specifically designed for ethylene compression in Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) production plants. Delivery pressures range up to 3500 bar, the highest pressure required in any industrial process. The most severe operating conditions require a unique architecture for both the crankcase and cylinders: special rods ("plungers") are used as single acting pistons. Most plungers are made of solid tungsten carbide, a material that is extremely hard and wear resistant, but extremely brittle as well. A straight plunger motion is the key to ensure the highest reliability and long packing ring life. In the Nuovo Pignone design, cylinders are directly bolted onto the crankcase, with no external support. The horizontal geometrical sliding plane of the crosshead contains the cylinder axis and the crosshead pin axis. Four long "wings", sliding with very tight clearance into full-length slots, support the crosshead, and two vertical guides provide precise lateral alignment. As a result, perfectly straight plunger motion is achieved, since the cylinder-to-crosshead alignment is insured under any condition and at all times. |
