First FRAME 5-2E shipped to the Netherlands

The first commercial MS5002E (Frame 5-2E) gas turbine was manufactured by GE's Oil & Gas business was shipped this week for installation at a fertilizer plant in the Netherlands. The Frame 5-2E is the newest addition to GE’s Frame 5 fleet – which has accumulated more than 16 million hours of service worldwide.

This June, as part of our Open Shop Days series, we conducted a tour of the Florence workshop and an introduction to the FR5-2E before it was shipped to Yara. Open Shop Days give our customers an opportunity to investigate the processes and technologies that go into making their equipment. It's always an interesting experience.

Lower emissions and higher efficiency

The new two-shaft machine combines the latest heavy-duty gas turbine technology with proven design concepts to achieve efficiency increases of 36% in mechanical drive operation and 35% in generator drive operation. It also features advanced Dry Low NOx technology, limiting NOx emissions to 18 parts per million and reducing CO2 emissions by 20,000 tons a year – the equivalent amount of CO2 absorbed by 20 square km of forest in one year.

The first unit was purchased by Yara Sluiskil B.V. of the Netherlands, and will replace an existing gas turbine at the company’s fertilizer plant in Sluiskil. Operating in cogeneration mode, the new unit will produce 30 MW of power and 50 tons per hour of steam for production processes. Commercial operation at the site is scheduled for the end of October 2007.

“While the Frame 5-2E retains the robustness of previous versions, it has been specifically designed for low environmental impact and high reliability, in direct response to the latest customer requirements, and GE's efforts towards low-impact environment technology,” said Claudi Santiago, President and CEO of GE's Oil & Gas business. “We’re delighted that this new technology was selected by Yara Sluiskil after thorough assessment against major international competition.”
