GE's ICL Technology to Help Increase Capacity of Emsland-Lingen Power Plant in Germany

Ecomagination-Certified Product Offers Environmental, Operational Benefits

FLORENCE, ITALY - April 17, 2008 :- RWE Power AG, Germany's largest power generator, has selected integrated motor compressor (ICL) technology from GE Oil & Gas to support the capacity expansion of a gas-fired power plant at Lingen in the northern German district of Emsland.

RWE is enlarging the power generating capacity of the Emsland-Lingen power station of 876 megawatts, and will optimize the gas turbine fuel gas supply by installing a reservoir pipe system and associated compression station for pressure boosting.

GE Oil & Gas will supply two 7-megawatt ICL compressors driven by high-speed electric motors and associated electrical drive systems provided by Converteam. The compression station will cover the load and load relief process of the two gas turbines at the site.

This will be the second installation of GE's ICL technology, which was introduced in 2007 and is designed to provide operating and environmental benefits. An integrated system with a single casing for the compressor and motor, the ICL combines three proven technologies: centrifugal compression, active magnetic bearings and high-speed electric motors and drives.

Driven by electricity rather than gas, ICL technology saves energy and avoids associated CO2 emissions. Using a typical 8-megawatt ICL rather than a comparably sized gas turbine-driven compressor can reduce CO2 emissions by 60% or more.

ICL units do not require a gearbox, lube oil system, shaft seals or external cooling system, enabling higher reliability and less maintenance at a lower cost. Other benefits include a smaller footprint and a smaller compression building, ease of installation, higher availability than a conventional electric motor-driven solution, a continuous speed range that enables a wide operating range, low emissions and a low noise level.

After completing a rigorous environmental and operational evaluation earlier this year, the ICL joined four other GE Oil & Gas products that have received ecomagination certification. Ecomagination is GE's commitment to address the need for cleaner, more efficient sources of energy, reduced emissions and abundant sources of clean water.

"We are very pleased that RWE Power, one of Europe's leading power generating companies, has selected our ICL technology. This is another example of the strong interest among our customers for advanced technology to help protect our environment," said Claudi Santiago, President and CEO of GE Oil & Gas. "We have designed the ICL product line to address today's growing requirements for reliability, pollution and noise control for oil and gas applications with clean dry gas services up to 15 megawatts of power".

The ICL units for the Emsland-Lingen project will be manufactured and tested at GE Oil & Gas facilities in Le Creusot, in Burgundy, France and will be delivered to the project site during the first half of 2009.
